But once you commit to a genuine, methodical inventory, the full complexity comes into focus: an enlarger with a precision optical column that can shift out of alignment from a single hard bump, photographic chemicals that are regulated hazardous materials under many moving contracts, light-sensitive paper and film that will be destroyed by even a brief exposure to daylight if their packaging is compromised in transit, developing tanks and reels that are perfectly calibrated and surprisingly easy to crack, a specialized safelight and electrical setup that took significant effort to install, and a room organization built entirely around light control and workflow logic — not the logic of a moving truck — that will be nearly impossible to reconstruct without detailed documentation. Pack a darkroom without a deliberate plan and you risk arriving at your new home with a misaligned enlarger, fogged photographic paper, cracked reels, spilled fixer, and no record of how the electrical and plumbing modifications were configured in the first place.

- The darkroom's infrastructure is harder to move than it appears: A home darkroom typically involves modifications to the room itself — blacked-out windows, a light-tight door seal, safelight wiring, a dedicated water supply and drain for wet-side trays, and sometimes ventilation for chemical fumes. None of those modifications pack into a box. Documenting exactly how the room was configured before a single item is removed is essential if you want any chance of recreating a functional darkroom at your destination without starting from scratch.
How to Assess and Document Your Darkroom Before Packing Begins
Before you touch a single piece of equipment, spend at least one full session in the darkroom doing nothing but documenting. The time you invest here will determine how long it takes to get your new darkroom functional — and whether you end up with an enlarger that prints cleanly or one that requires a technician visit before you can use it.
Photograph everything in working configuration
Start by photographing the entire room from each wall, capturing the full layout of the dry side (enlarger, timer, paper safe, contact printing frame) and the wet side (developing trays in sequence, chemical storage, sink and drain configuration). Then take close-up photographs of every cable and connection — the enlarger timer's wiring, the safelight circuit, the outlet placement. Pack lenses upright when possible, not flat, to reduce the risk of the glass elements separating under sustained pressure.
Box and brace the enlarger body
If the original packaging exists, use it — enlarger manufacturers design their boxes specifically for the column-and-head geometry, and original packaging is almost always superior to any improvised solution. If original packaging is not available, use a double-walled box that is significantly larger than the enlarger body, fill the base with at least three inches of foam or crumpled packing paper, place the enlarger in the center, and fill all remaining space firmly enough that the enlarger cannot shift at all when the box is shaken. Mark the box "FRAGILE — OPTICAL EQUIPMENT — THIS SIDE UP" on all four sides and the top.
Packing Chemicals, Consumables, and Darkroom Supplies

Decide what to transport and what to replace

This eliminates transport liability, ensures fresh chemistry for your first sessions in the new space, and avoids the risk of spills in the moving truck. Dry chemicals in sealed powder packets are generally easier to transport than liquids, but you should still confirm with your mover that they will accept them.
Pack developing trays, tanks, and reels carefully
Developing trays are large, lightweight, and prone to cracking at the corners if stacked carelessly with heavy objects placed on top. Stack trays in descending size order with a sheet of foam or packing paper between each one, and box them in their own container — do not use a tray box as a base for heavier items. Developing tanks and reels are more fragile than they appear: plastic reels crack easily, and a cracked reel will scratch film in the darkest possible way (after development, when you discover the marks). Wrap each tank and reel individually in bubble wrap and pack them in a box with other lightweight darkroom accessories.
Pack light-sensitive paper and film last and with extreme care
Photographic paper must be kept in its original sealed packaging, and that packaging must arrive intact. Do not repack paper into a different container — the inner light-tight envelope and the outer cardboard box work together, and improvised substitutes are rarely as effective. Place paper packages flat in a box with foam above and below, clearly labelled "LIGHT-SENSITIVE MATERIALS — DO NOT OPEN IN DAYLIGHT." Film, whether in canisters, sheet boxes, or roll boxes, should be treated identically. The final challenge of a darkroom move is not the packing — it is the reassembly. Assess the new space before the move, not after
If at all possible, visit the new location and assess the candidate room for the darkroom before moving day. Measure the space carefully, identify the window configuration (and what will be required to black it out), locate the nearest water supply and drain, note the electrical circuit load capacity, and consider ventilation — chemical fumes in an enclosed space require either a window exhaust fan or a filtered ventilation system. Reassemble and align the enlarger before unpacking anything else

Restore light control before anything else in the room
The darkroom is not functional until it is truly dark. Before unpacking any light-sensitive materials, blackout the windows using your chosen method (blackout roller blind, foam board, or purpose-built blackout shades), install the door seal, and do a full darkness test: sit in the completely closed room for five minutes and look for any light leaks.
